Kamla Persad-Bissessar’s entry into politics began in 1987 when she was elected as an alderwoman on the Saint Patrick County Council. In 1995, she was elected as the Member of Parliament for Siparia, a position she has held with distinction ever since.

Her early ministerial roles included serving as Minister of Education (1999–2001) and Attorney General, where she made history as the first woman to hold this senior legal office in Trinidad and Tobago. Ascendancy to National Leadership:

In 2006, Persad-Bissessar broke new ground by becoming the first woman to serve as Leader of the Opposition in Trinidad and Tobago. Her leadership qualities and political acumen culminated in her election as the political leader of the United National Congress (UNC) in January 2010, where she notably defeated the party’s founding leader.

Later that year, she led the People’s Partnership coalition to a landmark victory in the general elections, becoming the country’s first female Prime Minister. During her tenure from 2010 to 2015, she championed initiatives aimed at crime reduction, economic diversification, social welfare, and rural development. Additionally, she served as Chairperson-in-Office of the Commonwealth of Nations (2010–2011), becoming the first woman to hold this prestigious international role.

Resurgence and Contemporary Leadership:

After the 2015 electoral defeat, Persad-Bissessar remained a formidable political force as Leader of the Opposition, guiding the UNC through a decade of rebuilding and renewal. Her political resilience was rewarded in 2025 when she orchestrated a historic comeback, winning a snap election that ended the long-standing rule of the People’s National Movement (PNM).

Her current administration prioritizes job creation-promising over 50,000 new jobs-reopening children’s hospitals, enhancing pension schemes, improving public services, and addressing the pressing challenges of crime and economic instability. This resurgence marks a significant turning point for Trinidad and Tobago, with Persad-Bissessar at the helm steering the nation toward stability and growth.

Achievements and Enduring Legacy:

Kamla Persad-Bissessar’s career is distinguished by a series of historic firsts:

  •     The first woman to serve as Attorney General, Leader of the Opposition, and Prime Minister of Trinidad and Tobago
  •        The first female Chairperson-in-Office of the Commonwealth of Nations.
  •      The first woman of Indian descent to become a prime minister outside of India and the South Asian region.

Her academic credentials are equally impressive, including a Bachelor of Arts (Honours), Diploma and Master’s in Education from the University of the West Indies, a Legal Education Certificate earned with distinction, and an Executive MBA completed with distinction.

In recognition of her contributions, she was awarded the Pravasi Bharatiya Samman in 2012, honoring her impact on the Indian diaspora. Moreover, Time magazine ranked her among the world’s most influential female leaders in 2011.
